23 lessons from eye tracking studies

Virtual Hosting.com has a great 23 point summary of results from eye tracking studies.

Few interesting points I took away:

  • Text is the first thing noticed–not images
  • Upper left is the sweet spot
  • User scan pages in the F shape
  • Use numbers; 1,2,3 instead of spelling them out

Go read and let me know what you think.

I think web designers need to read this, paying attention to “Large blocks of text are avoided.” and “Fancy formatting and fonts are ignored.”

Tony - Thanks for this tip. I learned a lot and will share this with our team here at CGD. I was particularly interested that smaller text encourages people to slow down and read, while larger text encourages people to scan. I worry sometimes that our site is too text heavy - it may well be — but this finding made me think that for our audience there may in fact be some method to our madness.

Lot’s of other good tips, too. Bigger photos!
