Interesting approach to turning older buildings green without total gut and rehab. I’d like to see a proof of concept production building. regardless of the initial buzz for or against, it is a good idea and shows some of the more creative concepts begin generated at the moment.

Architectural company LAVA believes ugly buildings should have a shot at happiness, with these tower skins acting like a “transparent cocoon” made from mesh textile, capable of being lit up in the evening for maximum attention. They'd supposedly generate energy with the addition of photovoltaic cells, collect rain water and improve ventilation for the buildings.

Ah, the sea. The big blue. From sharks to shipwrecks, from the perfectly formed pipes of Hawaii’s waves to the dark and chilly depths of the deepest sea trenches, it’s one of Earth’s most fascinating habitats – one that people love watching and exploring.

Tonight, Google is bringing Internet-bound ocean lovers a new portal to the amazing biological and topographical diversity that lies beneath the waves. If you’re into underwater environments and you’re down with Google Earth,we highly recommend checking out Ocean Showcase, Google’s latest product release.

We are not going to succeed if we do not break free the binds of the past. Yes, infrastructure investment for job creation is reliable (and frankly needed at this time) as history proves. However, to move forward it is time to begin cultivating the green economy. Infrastructure should focus on green/renewable energy and infrastructure to combat the effects of climate change and rehab old and failing school buildings (and other similar structures) into model green buildings, we should invest heavily in R&D for renewable energy. If we want to be world leaders, then we should stop the apathy and start leading.

If congress can’t understand this is the way forward than we are truly doomed to be stuck in a past that simply does not work in the present–as is proven by a failed economy, detoriariting cities and infrastructure, failing schools, record trade deficits and national debt.

Please, have the courage to change. If the leaders lead, the people will follow. Do the job you were hired to do and need to do, not what you perceive is comfortable or easy.

Last month, the House passed a $155 billion bill that aims to stimulate the job market through infrastructure projects and helping states pay the salaries of public employees.

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin, along with Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan, is expected to offer a jobs package in coming weeks. It is likely to include efforts to boost small business and renewable energy, aides said.

Uhh–WTF man…

Hey Pat, I thought Satan was the master of earthly pleasures and vice that lure people away from God? Please, correct me if I am wrong but wouldn’t it make more sense if the Haitians were fat, lazy and apathetic rather than dirt poor, struggling for basic human needs and being left behind by the –oh yeah–fat, lazy and apathetic rich countries??

Also, by your own logic–isn’t it really the fault of the French?

Despite the absurdity from Mr. Robertson, I do hope you will help the Haitians in this very tragic and urgent time. There are many non-profits accepting donations and you can even use your cell phone to donate a quick $10 by texting Haiti, H-a-i-t-i, to 90999.

On his Christian Broadcasting Network show yesterday, Rev. Pat Robertson said that the nation of Haiti has been devastated by a large earthquake because its people “made a pact with the devil.”

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” Robertson said. “They were under the heel of the French … and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.”

“True story,” he continued. “And the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.” Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.

Believe it or not, this is a real article and I suppose the depression being reported is also real.

This article is a gold mine for environmental organizations to begin recruiting new help in the effort to start getting ourselves right and being good stewards of our resources and nature.

Why you may ask, how can I be so flip with others emotions?? Because, the movie is about environmentalism (I believe, haven’t seen it)–BUT we have a situation here Bob, like it or lump it, our planet is in peril of becoming uninhabitable for humans (as well as many other animals and plants). Instead of being depressed and dreaming of alien world paradises why don’t we start getting active about making our home the place we want to live. There is no escape from the situation and as Robert Frost might say, “the best way out is always through”, so let’s start working together and fix what we have so we can end the misery of these poor sufferers of Pandora induced depression….

The beautiful alien planet Pandora depicted in James Cameron’s Avatar is so captivating that some audience members are becoming depressed and even suicidal when they fail to find meaning in real life after the film is over.

Writes Jo Piazza for CNN.com:On the fan forum site “Avatar Forums,” a topic thread entitled “Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible,” has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

Here are just a few of the ways people are coping on Avatar-Forums.com :”I just watched avatar a few weeks ago and I'm feeling depressed and sad. It's like I want to reach out and be in Pandora. I'd do anything to be in Pandora. I've tried so hard to dream about me being on Pandora but it hasn't worked.”

Good read in the NYT today, A Trainspotter’s Guide to the Future of the World about public transportation and rail systems in Europe and Asia and the painful lack of rail infrastructure in the States. I truly wish we had a better train system (and that it was affordable to ride. When I was in College I used to ride the train between Philly and Harrisburg (and sometimes hop up to NYC before the prices skyrocketed). The train ride was relaxing, smooth and convenient but alas now that I am several years out of college and employed I can’t afford to ride Amtrak anymore.

The quote from the article (below) deserves attention–we are trying to create jobs, boost the economy, reduce fuel consumption and become better stewards of our environment–right? Well, it seems to me investment in a new “New Deal” to build rail infrastructure seems to be a solution in waiting to all these issues–for the citizens it’s win-win. However, to understand why the investment won’t happen we have to examine who would potentially lose–car manufacturers and the oil industry–the robber barons of the old, failed economy still hold the power…I hope if you agree you will think about pushing for this investment with your representatives, if you disagree, leave me a comment on why.

The reasons for America’s laggardliness is easily explained. To begin with, the initial investment in a rail network costs an awful lot of money, which national governments usually provide as a “public good.” That in turn means that the taxpayer pays, which is much less disagreeable when the taxpayer can observe the satisfactory results of that investment. In America, most of the country feels that it is handing over funds solely to support East Coast and West Coast commuters.

As I read this article all I kept thinking is this HAS to be joke, but I don’t think it is, unfortunately. Oh, and they don’t just single out dogs, cats are just as bad and cat poo is apparently even more toxic to sea life than the treacherous dog turds!

And pets’ environmental impact is not limited to their carbon footprint, as cats and dogs devastate wildlife, spread disease and pollute waterways, the Vales say.

With a total 7.7 million cats in Britain, more than 188 million wild animals are hunted, killed and eaten by feline predators per year, or an average 25 birds, mammals and frogs per cat, according to figures in the New Scientist.

Likewise, dogs decrease biodiversity in areas they are walked, while their faeces cause high bacterial levels in rivers and streams, making the water unsafe to drink, starving waterways of oxygen and killing aquatic life.

And cat poo can be even more toxic than doggy doo — owners who flush their litter down the toilet ultimately infect sea otters and other animals with toxoplasma gondii, which causes a killer brain disease.

But despite the apocalyptic visions of domesticated animals’ environmental impact, solutions exist, including reducing pets’ protein-rich meat intake.

“If pussy is scoffing ‘Fancy Feast’ — or some other food made from choice cuts of meat — then the relative impact is likely to be high,” said Robert Vale.

“If, on the other hand, the cat is fed on fish heads and other leftovers from the fishmonger, the impact will be lower.”

Other potential positive steps include avoiding walking your dog in wildlife-rich areas and keeping your cat indoors at night when it has a particular thirst for other, smaller animals’ blood.

As with buying a car, humans are also encouraged to take the environmental impact of their future possession/companion into account.

So, animals that have existed–long before the automobile–long before any mechanical engines, are now on the list of contributors to global warming? They forgot about the Methane produced at cattle and dairy farms too.I wonder if the epic struggle between cats and dogs led to the downfall of ancient Egypt? or Rome? Altantis…

I think it’s time to stop looking for blame (and for God’s sake) please don’t blame my puppies for the bad economy, reducing oil reserves and damaging the environment–which they are a natural part of and start working on solutions.

Smart people, we know there is a problem, we need solutions, now.

Snap! Al Gore is back and with some grim news from Copenhagen…

COPENHAGEN – New computer modeling suggests the Arctic Ocean may be nearly ice-free in the summertime as early as 2014, Al Gore said Monday at the U.N. climate conference. This new projection, following several years of dramatic retreat by polar sea ice, suggests that the ice cap may nearly vanish in the summer much sooner than the year 2030, as was forecast by a U.S. government agency eight months ago….

Last April, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that Arctic summers could be almost ice-free within 30 years, not at the 21st century’s end as earlier predicted.

Gore cited new scientific work at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, whose Arctic ice research is important for planning polar voyages by Navy submarines. The computer modeling there stresses the “volumetric,” looking not just at the surface extent of ice but its thickness as well.

“Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap during some of the summer months will be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years,” Gore said. His office later said he meant nearly ice-free, because ice would be expected to survive in island channels and other locations.

Now, check out the strong counter argument

Asked for comment, one U.S. government scientist questioned what he called this “aggressive” projection.

“It’s possible but not likely,” said Mark Serreze of the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado. “We’re sticking with 2030.”

Zing!

OK, but I am left wondering…As it seems there is no argument that the polar ice caps ARE indeed melting, what are we really arguing about?

I hear Michael Jackson singing in my head, “It’s time to make a change, for once in my life. I am going to make a difference, gonna make it right…” Come on, you know the song. Seriously, the argument has ended and appears that facts are facts but yet the arguments continues. World government’s and our leadership has a drinking problem and they need to admit that they have a problem so we can all begin to work towards a solution. Or, we could just ignore it, or keep debating and let our collective planetary liver shrivel til we no longer have a habitat we can survive in.

Check out this mapping tool created by the design firm Modernista! (recent Webby nominee) out of Boston for the National Park Foundation–the site is called this land is your land (now I have Woody Guthrie stuck in my head).

I like the overlay of comments used on top of the pictures used to represent the park–this is an easy way to start building a community feel around a location and makes the image feel active and alive (potential great tool for environmental groups).  The site also uses the more traditional and common map views as a sidebar element with content overview of the Park.

In addition, the climate-change problem is complex and deeply rooted in multiple sectors, including the economy and its push for consumption along with population growth, according to one climate scientist, who also thinks human nature and our love of material goods could need a fix.

“We need to change our mind frame – our values,” said Rasmus Benestad of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. “Perhaps quality time, love, family values, friendship and respect are preferable to material goods and status? Or maybe we humans are too vain. In this problem, I think we are seeing the worst of ourselves in the mirror. We see power struggle and corruption.”

Four day work week anyone

“I think that in principle there are technological and infrastructure fixes to the problem,” Benestad said, citing one example as TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday). Four-day workweeks have been shown to result in less energy use. “But the problem is deeply rooted in how our economy works, based on ever-increasing consumption (an irrational concept), he said. “It’s also closely related to the human population growth on Earth, and common justice.”

“The solution to the problem is greatly retarded by the lack of scientific and technological awareness in certain societies, notably the U.S, where superstitions and political passions often trump sound reasoning,” Emanuel said. “For example, we could make great strides toward energy independence and reduction of greenhouse emissions by undertaking a serious program of nuclear energy, which can easily supply our energy needs for 100 years. This, coupled with innovation in electric vehicles, would solve much of the problem.”

But even if we were to stop emitting greenhouse gases all together, many of their effects would still emerge, say many scientists. And for that, adapting to such an environment is necessary.

“I am also pleased to see the increased attention being paid to adaptation,” Backlund said. “Commitments to help developing countries with adaptation funding would be very helpful, as would commitments by developed nations to increase funding for the research that is needed to support effective adaptation.”

via Scientists: Dim Outlook for Climate Summit – Yahoo! News.

Adaptation is very important, precisely because it effects Developing countries the most and even if we fixed all the causes today problems would still linger due to the build of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

Check the Center for Global Development’s CARMA site for more informaiton about Carbon emissions, as well as, the effects of climate change on Developing countries.
