Eventbrite Gets A $6.5 Million Infusion From Sequoia Capital. (tech crunch)

Popular online event site Eventbrite has raised $6.5 million in funding, according to an SEC filing. The company has confirmed the funding, and says Sequoia Capital is the new investor. Sequoia partner Roelof Botha joins the board of directors. Both Roelof and Sequoia backed Eventbrite CEO Kevin Hartz’s previous startup, Xoom

Eventbrite provides free event registration for events that are free–this is great for non-rpofits that need a low (no) budget solution for automating event registration and collecting attendee information (thank you Sequoia).

Men's Kahru Fulcrum Fluid Ride

Men's Kahru Fulcrum Fluid Ride

After a short break post triathlon season 1 (and battle with allergies/laryngitis/bronchitis) I am back to training and the first major race of my season will be the Cowtown Marathon in Fort Worth, TX (if you are in TX in February I hope to see you there). Running is not my strongest suit so I really want to concentrate on correcting my form as I build endurance and speed. The long training runs will be perfect for working on my foot strike and posture. This should help me as I start my 2010 race season.

But, I meant to write about shoes….So,since my running shoes from last season were in need of replacement I decided to make a break with my trusted brooks and try a new brand (to me at least) that I was introduced to during the Nation’s Triathlon expo–Kahru. I purchased the Fulcrum Fluid Ride over the Fast Fulcrum Ride with the thinking that over the next few months my running is more about distance and form than speed–so the bit of extra padding in the sole seemed like a good choice for a trainer. Also, I think the shoe looks pretty cool. I had my first run in them last night and they felt good but tonight will be a better test with an outdoor 5 miler.

If you are looking to try a new shoe I’d say go for it, if you have been wearing Kahru leave a comment and let me know your experience.

It does not matter how slow you go so long as you do not stop.
Wisdom of Confucius

I just registered to start using Tumblr today (more on that coming soon) and they had this quote on their initial post pages–I like this quote for many reasons, endurance is essential–especially in a world where everything moves at the speed of light and your attention is always on demand.

Wednesday Mashable reported that Microsoft signed a deal with Facebook and Twitter to include status updates in Bing’s search results

Yesterday Mashable is reporting the announcement that Google will be unveiling social search

- The bottom of search results will soon have social networking information from your friends, like their Flickr photos or their status updates. It’s a blended search integration, similar to seeing news or image results.

- These are pulled from social networks connected to your Google Profile. The more that are connected, the more social information that will appear in search results.

- They have also improved searching for images using social networks. Images become more relevant using social networking data.

- It will launch in Google Labs in the next few weeks.

So what does this mean for you and I? Your status updates will likely become available via public search, this might deter some but others might not worry–any actions we take online (for the most part) are recordable and traceable. I think marketing firms are going to gobble this new data up though to analyze trends in online conversation within groups and find new ways to micro-market within the throng of niches that new exist within online communities. For those who might not know–Facebook is already using your friends pics in ads targeted to you (you have to select no and opt out from within your profile if you don’t want your friends or your own pics exposed for this use).

The theory of our activities and search is that we are teaching the machines by providing them data. Market firs and social scientists are harvesting this data as well, the book Click: What Millions of People are doing Online and Why It Matters (is a little dry) but has a great explanation of how this data is used. The video below is also a great review from the Kansas State Dept. of Anthropology, Digital Ethnography about how the Web (and we) are evolving.

Read Write Start has an article about a new Give Work  iPhone App which allows for tasks to be given to workers in refugee camps via cell signals. Tasks are small such as searching for copyrights on images but the potential is huge. The two groups that teamed up are Samasource and CrowdFlower.

Could microwork based on digital tasks become a  new and viable economic model, and provide a needed boost to Developing countries? Software as a Service (SaaS) has certainly taken root and is common in business practices–your life in the Cloud.

I remember reading about the explosion of cell phones throughout the African continent and how the economic models were beginning to change–cell minutes being traded as currency–in the time frame since the initial boon, connectivity may be better today making the LaaS market ripe for potential. While reading the original post my mind was instantly drawn to the notion of using microtasks for QA testing of new websites and applications-could Labor as a Service become a new way to deliver better tested products in shorter time (all while helping to increase the welfare of others)?

I’d be interested in hearing what you think about this topic, leave a comment…

Hi all,

I am officially back online and will be working to get my site set up again over the next few weeks. Short story–Blue host sucks, took my site down and canceled my hosting, all four years of my writing inaccessible for final download and back up (I’ll rant more later).

Silver lining, it’s a fresh start, I am using a new green hosting company so my site is now carbon neutral and a portion of my payments got to reforestation. I intend to bring you zen quotes as before in addition to writing about triathlons, technology, art and life in general.

Stay tuned dear friends
